Parachute Woman ― Cairo Version

Cairo International Experimental Theater Festival, Egypt
September 2005

One of the 85 works presented at various venues across Cairo, out of which 30 competed for 17th Cairo International Experimental Theater Festival Prize, we showed Parachute Woman at Al Hanager Theater. The Theater had a unique entrance hall with a structuralist interior design with exposed plumbing pipes painted in red, blue and yellow. In the hall, the stage was sandwiched between red audience seats on two sides. For our presentation, however, audience seating was set up on a part of the stage area, and the empty audience seats behind the scrim backdrop came up in the light at the end of the play to highlight the desperate loneliness of the woman, the play’s only protagonist, against the world. Playing this role, Ando Tomoko received the Best Solo Performance Award, a prize category established specially for her that year.
