house = woman

A to Z , Shinjuku, Tokyo, Oct.-Nov. 2010

In a dark, deserted, ruin-like basement, there is a sofa which slowly starts moving on its own. After a moment it halts, and there comes out of it an arm. It reaches to switch on a light. A woman’s voice is heard. It speaks some lines from the Greek tragedy of Antigone, who tries to bury her own brother against the rule of her land. Then, legs and a head come out of the sofa to join the arm. It seems the woman is the sofa, but soon she separates herself from it and begins haunting an abandoned entrance to the house. She starts confiding with the guard of the house, and mouthes his words. After a lengthy darkness, she reappears in a white dress with a train so long that it makes her look as if she were stretched vertically. She goes on to deliver an impassioned speech to denounce the state and speaks in defense of affection towards kins and gods, only to audience of none. Antigone’s profound solitude excavates the fundamental sorrow of the human existence.
