Kawase

BankART Bashamichi, Yokohama
December 2004

“Kawase” means monetary exchange in Japanese, but at the same time, it is about exchanges among people, goods, and commodities. This piece was staged at the former Fuji Bank building, built in 1929 on Bashamichi Street in Yokohama. Inside this historical epitome of modern capitalistic economy, a woman peddler arrives on a specially devised electric wheel chair. She puts price tags on objects she finds abandoned in the former bank and makes them her merchandise. The vaguely workaholic woman’s acts spark rich imagery related to “kawase”, one of the most characteristic human activities.
